Rehabilitation using Pilates Equipment, Group Class, Exercise Prescription

At Healthcare on Collins one of the most common findings over the years has been that clients were not able to fully rehabilitate their injuries either through lack of knowing what to do on their own or not having access to the necessary facilities. That being the case we installed a fully equipped rehabilitation gymnasium in which the clients and practitioners can work together over the final stages of recovery and so achieve their goals.

The Physiotherapists at Healthcare on Collins conduct one on one or group exercise classes for injury rehabilitation and prevention. Physiotherapy appointments and sessions in the gym have a strong focus on exercise prescription, exercise delivery and exercise performance using rehab specific exercises.

In addition to the use of the gym equipment some of the exercises in your session may incorporate techniques based on Pilates principles using reformer – based spring resistance, combined with a series of floor exercises. The overall aim is to improve the stability of the spine and therefore control pain and enhance musculoskeletal function.

More recently we have acquired the Force Plates, the Force Deck and the NordBord of the VALD Performance Equipment range. Other equipment incorporated into your program may be the physio ball, magic circle, roller or small Pilates balls. The Physiotherapists use direction-specific, non-impact movements to enable you to engage in pain-free exercises.

The one-on-one sessions and classes are particularly effective when used in combination with physiotherapy to optimise your recovery from injury and prevent relapse.

The classes are most beneficial pre and post orthopaedic surgery to maximise your outcome and speed up your return to activity and sport. The classes aim to reduce musculoskeletal pain by strengthening and retraining your core. Increasing the strength and control of stabilisation muscles around the spine helps support your posture and reduces the risk of re-injury.

Your Physiotherapist will first assess you to determine the appropriate exercise regime for you and will then formulate and tailor a program specific to your personal goals and capacity.

When you are assessed as being ready, you may then join the small group class with up to 4 participants, alternatively you can continue with individual exercise supervision.

For most people who do join the small group classes it is recommended to attend once to twice per week to help ensure goals are reached within an appropriate time frame. After 10 sessions, a 30 minute one on one Physiotherapy session is conducted to thoroughly assess your progress, redesign your program if required and set new goals. You may then continue with more classes or move onto more independent exercising if your goals have been reached.

You may also be provided with a home exercise program.

The focus is on personalised, supervised programs providing:

  • Injury prevention and recovery
  • Reduced musculoskeletal pain
  • Improved strength, balance and flexibility
  • Improved posture
  • Improved core strength
  • Pre-habilitation before surgery
  • Rehabilitation post -surgery
  • Reduced pre-natal back & pelvis pain
  • Increased post-natal muscle tone, strength and endurance
  • Optimising sporting performance
