Flu Vaccinations

Flu Vaccinations

Have you considered your flu vaccine yet for the oncoming winter? If not, it’s certainly worth considering getting vaccinated now. Healthcare on Collins offers flu vaccines for $30. However, certain members of the population are eligible for free vaccinations, including those aged 65 and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders from 15 years of age, pregnant women, and people with existing medical conditions.

The flu is caused by a virus that spreads easily through infected droplets in the air and by hands carrying the virus.

It can infect your nose, throat, and lungs, causing sudden symptoms such as fever, sore throat, and muscle aches. In severe cases, it can lead to complications like pneumonia and bronchitis, resulting in hospitalisation or even death. The flu can also make underlying medical conditions worse.

Vaccination is recommended before the flu season starts. As the strains of the virus can change each year and even if you received a flu vaccination towards the end of the last flu season, it is still recommended that you get vaccinated again before this season. It’s especially important for people at high risk of complications to get vaccinated.

If you’re 65 years or older, an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander aged 15 or older, pregnant, or have existing medical conditions such as cardiac disease, chronic respiratory conditions, chronic illness, chronic neurological conditions, impaired immunity, or long-term aspirin therapy for children aged 6 months to 10 years, you’re eligible for a free flu vaccine.

While the flu vaccine may have some side effects, they’re usually mild and short-lived. You may experience redness or discomfort at the site of the injection, mild fever, muscle pains, or feel generally unwell for a day or two after the vaccination. However, these flu-like symptoms don’t mean that you have the flu; they’re simply your body’s natural response to the vaccine. If you have a severe reaction to eggs, it’s important to talk to your immunisation provider before receiving the vaccination.
