CARLTON FOOTBALL CLUB

Training in Qatar!

Recently, Simon Nelson, one of our Physiotherapists travelled to Qatar in the Middle East as part of his ongoing role with the Carlton Football Club.  The club undertook an intensive training camp at the world renowned Aspire Academy with mainly a group of younger and developing players.  The aim of the camp was to help determine and experience the benefits of training in relative extreme heat and training and sleeping at simulated altitude.

From the Physiotherapy perspective the challenge was to assist the players in a fairly rapid transition from the end of season break into intensive training involving cross training, skills work, running and weights.  A strong focus was the thorough preparation for training and subsequent optimum recovery as most days involved fairly consistent loading on energy demands, especially coupled with the training in the heat.  Fortunately modern footballers are highly disciplined and generally proactive in terms of injury prevention and recovery and on the whole the group adapted well to the foreign and challenging training environment.

The initial response to the camp has been highly position and over time the club will analyse the data gathered and assess the impact of the participating players' fitness and injury profiles.

PHYSIOTHERAPY AT THE MELBOURNE SPORTS MEDICINE CENTRE

A City based Sports Medicine Practice treats many clients of all ages with a variety of postural neck, shoulder, chest pain and/or stiffness.

Treatment involves joint mobilisation, massage, stretches and usually a series of exercises to perform regularly.

Current trends have moved towards resisted weight training as an integral part of rehabilitation as well as prevention of the office type postural syndromes.

The programs can be user friendly without the need for expensive gym memberships, and can be set up with a few weights and directed towards muscle groups that improve posture, support and function.

If you are interested in starting a home based program please phone 9650 9372 and make an appointment to see Physiotherapist Roger Moore.
